ValvTechnologies and MetalTek Energy Products Partner to Supply Krško Plant with Critical Equipment for Emergency Diesel Generator Upgrade
(HOUSTON, TX) – April 25, 2012
ValvTechnologies, Inc., manufacturer of zero‐leakage, severe service isolation valve solutions, in partnership with MetalTek Energy Products, have supplied Slovenian based, Nuklearna elektrarna Krško, d.o.o with valves and strainers in support of their Emergency Diesel Generators (EDG) upgrade project.
The equipment will play a critical role in the success of the upgrade of the plant’s emergency backup power system. This is similar to the system which failed at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Plant during the March 2011 nuclear accident resulting from the earthquake and tsunami that rendered the plant in total blackout.
Slovenia’s national nuclear company required 29 valves and two strainers, all in accordance with ASME III Class 3 and 10CRF50 for Safety Related Applications. The equipment was needed in less than 12 weeks after receipt of the executable contract.
The supply of equipment in compliance with ASME III and 10CFR50 typically takes a minimum of 26 weeks. The order was booked on January 18 and the final delivery was shipped 10.5 weeks after, on March 31, in time for the Krško outage, which is currently ongoing.
Warren Brandon, MetalTek General Manager said “This project is exactly why we build flexibility into our group ‐ to leverage our years of experience at the utility and OEM levels to support the customer whenever and wherever they need it.
ValvTechnologies supplied 27 VTI Model V1‐2 Metal Seated Ball Valves, mostly 600# class, ranging from ¾” thru 4” full port in A105 and 316SS materials. Additionally, the company provided two 1.5” 316SS VTI/DFT Inline Check Valves. MetalTek Energy Products provided the two 3” 150# Class A105 Tee Strainers under their ASME III and 10CFR50 Appendix B programs, and supported the effort with direct shipment from their Chattanooga facilities.
The original specifications called out for Gate and Globe Valves which were unavailable from ASME suppliers in the lead‐time required. Additionally an engineering design change was required to accommodate the company’s technology, which was successfully coordinated within the delivery commitment.
“Short lead‐time demands are a more frequent occurrence in the nuclear industry than most would expect. Undertaking this project, in terms of the customer delivery requirements was a huge risk, but also a great reward after the endeavor’s success. Securing the commitment from management and our suppliers was crucial in the implementation of this project. It is an example of what can be done when the team makes the commitment,” said Bill Henwood VP & Director‐Nuclear at ValvTechnologies.
